This project advanced the geospatial and carbon footprint analysis of earth materials through a cross-disciplinary research and design collaboration involving a number of Columbia University schools. As part of this project, we designed and implemented a small pavilion in the courtyard of Reid Hall, Columbia University’s Paris property. Built with compressed earth blocks, the two walls of the pavilion showcased the transportation of all the materials from their extraction to the Reid Hall site. This representation used the traditional sgraffito technique, which required the carving of the outer layer of earth plaster into specific shapes to reveal the sublayers of plaster, emphasized here through a change in dye.
