The UpGrid brings an innovative approach to the manufacturing and construction of a mass timber system for residential development. Considering today’s short life span of residential buildings and the rapid changes of housing needs in dense urban contexts, this project looks into the possibility of designing for disassembly and reuse. Not only do these strategies offer flexibility and scalability, they also aim to upcycle construction materials and reduce demolition waste.

The South Bronx is renowned for the diversity of its population and its strong community ties. A key feature of the project is the optimization of the floor-to-area ratio on residential levels. This strategic approach facilitates the inclusion of expansive community spaces on both ground floors and rooftops across two buildings while ensuring the availability of affordable housing units. The residential floor layout is designed with an efficient grid system. This grid optimizes the prefabrication of the system and grants residents greater flexibility in the use of their spaces. Moreover, it enables a distinct allocation for wet zones and dry zones, enhancing the practicality of the construction system and the functionality of the living spaces.
