This project explored how to improve the environmental performance of an existing heritage building. The century-old former Caird and Rayner Warehouse occupies a prominent position in Tower Hamlets, London. It was important to maintain and highlight the beauty and atmospheric qualities of the hall spaces.
The aim was to convert the warehouse into an enjoyable and welcoming community center. The greatest challenge was the lack of flexibility regarding adjustments to the building’s envelope. The main goal of the proposed improvements was to achieve a free-running building that allowed very low energy loads and offered enough adaptive opportunities for visual and thermal comfort. Several thermal and daylight simulations were conducted to reach a design proposal that provided optimal comfort and atmosphere through subtle and design interventions.
