This project explores the reuse of the old PS64 building into a K-12 school that addresses local community needs. Looking at the important role the old PS64 played in the lower east side of Manhattan, the Community School #1 (CS1) is the first prototype of a K-12 school that opens 50% of its floor area to community use.

Throughout the development of this project, every design decision was evaluated for its environmental and social impact benefits, aiming to minimize CS1's ecological footprint and amplify its positive influence on the community. Fundamental considerations such as embodied carbon, passive heating and cooling strategies, sense of belonging, empowerment, and accessibility guided the design process.
